Document Verification (DV) is the final gatekeeping stage before a government job offer is issued. Many candidates who clear written exams and interviews lose their candidature at this stage due to document issues. Be fully prepared.

What is Document Verification?

DV is a process where the recruiting organisation physically verifies all your original documents against the information submitted in your application form. Even the smallest discrepancy can lead to disqualification.

When Does DV Happen?

  • For SSC exams: After Tier 2 result
  • For bank exams: After interview
  • For UPSC: After Personality Test
  • For railway exams: After CBT Stage 2
  • For state govt: Varies by state and post

You will receive a DV call letter mentioning the date, time, and venue.

Complete Document Checklist for DV

Carry all documents listed in our documents required guide. Key originals:

Mandatory:

  • Printout of online application form
  • Admit card of all exam stages
  • All result/scorecard documents
  • Class 10 and 12 certificates + marksheets
  • Degree/Diploma certificate (original or provisional)
  • Category certificate if applicable
  • Aadhaar Card
  • 5-10 passport-size photographs

The DV Process: What Happens on the Day

  1. Arrive at the venue 30 minutes early with documents arranged in order
  2. Submit your DV call letter at the reception
  3. You will be allotted a token number
  4. At your turn, sit across the verification officer
  5. Submit originals one by one as asked
  6. Photocopies are collected and retained by the department
  7. Originals are returned after verification
  8. Any discrepancy is flagged and a written response may be sought

Common Reasons for DV Failure

  • Name spelling differs between application and certificate
  • OBC certificate not in central government format
  • EWS certificate expired (issued in previous financial year)
  • Provisional degree not accepted (check notification)
  • Experience certificate not on company letterhead
  • Photograph on certificate not resembling current appearance

What Happens After Successful DV?

After DV, candidates receive:

  • A joining letter mentioning the date and place to report
  • A medical examination date (for many posts)
  • Pre-appointment formalities briefing

Medical Examination

For many government posts, especially in railways, police, paramilitary, and defence, a medical fitness test is conducted after DV. Standards vary by post - check the notification or our police/defence exam guides.
