Only a small fraction of government job aspirants reach the interview stage. Here is how to make sure you do not stumble at the final hurdle after clearing your written exam.
Types of Government Job Interviews
- UPSC Personality Test (IAS/IPS): 275 marks, 30-45 minutes, board of 5 members
- Bank PO Interview (IBPS/SBI): 100 marks (IBPS) / 30 marks (SBI), 15-20 minutes
- PSU Interviews: Technical + HR, 30-60 minutes
- Group Discussion (SBI PO): 20 marks, 15-20 minutes as group
Preparation: What to Know
About Yourself
- Be clear about your educational background and work experience
- Know your hometown’s current news, industries, and political setup
- Be ready for: “Why government job?”, “Why this department?”, “What if you do not get this post?”
About the Organisation
For a bank interview, know:
- Current CMD/MD name, headquarters
- Recent RBI policy changes (Repo rate, CRR, SLR)
- Major initiatives (PM Jan Dhan, UPI, PMJJBY)
For UPSC, know:
- Ministry you will be working under
- Current bills and policies in your optional subject area
Current Affairs
Last 6 months of current affairs is non-negotiable. Focus on:
- National policy announcements
- Economic indicators (GDP growth, inflation)
- Recent government schemes
What to Wear
First impressions matter. Government interview dress code:
Men: Formal shirt (light colour) + dark trousers + leather shoes + tie (optional). Avoid jeans or casual footwear.
Women: Formal saree or salwar suit (preferred) or western formal. Conservative, professional look.
Common Interview Questions (with Answer Tips)
“Tell me about yourself” - 2-minute structured answer: education → background → skills → why this job
“Why do you want a government job?” - Mention job security, opportunity to serve the public, work-life balance - be genuine, not rehearsed-sounding
“What are your weaknesses?” - Mention a real weakness but frame the improvement you are making
“What if you are posted in a remote area?” - Government interviewers respect willingness to serve anywhere. Be positive.
