Fake government job notifications are rampant in India, targeting desperate aspirants. Learning to identify them can save you money, time, and mental distress.
Red Flags of a Fake Notification
1. No Official Website Mentioned
Every legitimate government recruitment notification mentions an official .gov.in or .nic.in website. If the “apply link” points to a third-party site or commercial domain, it is likely fake.
Legitimate examples:
- ssc.nic.in (SSC)
- upsc.gov.in (UPSC)
- ibps.in (IBPS)
- indianrailways.gov.in (Railways)
2. Too Good to Be True Vacancies
Fake notifications often advertise unrealistically large vacancies (50,000 posts overnight) or very high salaries for low qualifications.
3. Direct Walk-In Selection Without Exam
Genuine central government jobs require written exams. Any “walk-in interview only” recruitment for a Group B or above post is suspicious.
4. Payment Required for Application or Selection
No legitimate government recruitment charges money for selection. Application fees are modest (โน100-โน1,000), paid on the official portal only, with an official fee payment receipt.
If anyone demands money for:
- Guarantee of selection
- Interview coaching from “insiders”
- Processing fees beyond the stated application fee
It is 100% fraud.
5. WhatsApp/Telegram Job Forwards Without Source
Notification PDFs circulating on WhatsApp with no traceable official source are often fabricated or outdated. Always cross-verify the original source.
How to Verify a Government Job Notification
- Google the recruiting organisation’s official website - do not click forwarded links
- Check if the notification appears in the “Recruitment” or “What’s New” section of the official website
- Verify the advertisement number mentioned in the notification PDF against the official website
- Check if the notification is covered by mainstream news sources (for large recruitments)
- Look for official letterhead, seal, and authorised signatory in the PDF
